DOS & Windows to 98 SE (tm)

Your config.sys file, located in c:\, should have the following lines

       files=59
       buffers=40

  If you have Windows 95 or 98 installed the line with files should read

      files=69
      buffers=40
Make sure you have no more than one line that begins files= In some cases the number following files= might have to be higher then 69. Do not lower a number existing prior to the installation

Windows Me(tm) and All Earlier Versions

 Left Click Start, then Run, and type msconfig and left click OK.
 Left click the System.ini tab (near top) when the next window comes up.
 Left click the plus sign next to [386Enh]. Use the vertical scroll bar
 to check for a line with PerVMFiles= within that section. If there is
 change the number following the = sign to 89 and save.

 If there is not left click the open folder icon next to [386Enh]
 and then left click new. Then type

  PerVMFiles=89

 Make sure the box in front of the line is checked and that every letter
 is typed exactly as instructed. Then left click OK. Restart your computer.

Users of Windows NT, Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP

Users of these systems cannot use some the earlier OS commands that were once in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. But they may use statements within CONFIG.NT and AUTOEXEC.NT. These files are either in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory.

Two lines must be added and/or edited in CONFIG.NT. If the words FILES= and/or BUFFERS= do not appear add them as they appear below on separate lines. If they do just edit the number, don't add another line with the same word.

           FILES=89

           BUFFERS=45

 Left click Start, then Programs, then Accessories, then Notepad
 In Notepad left click File, then Open from the drop down menu
 On the Open Screen use the Lookin area to select the folder

 C:\WinNt\System32 (try first, usually original installs
                       of XP Pro and Windows 2000)

 C:\WINDOWS\System32 (for XP Home and upgrades from 98, etc.)
